For Thomas

Remembering Thomas

Thomas (Tots, to his Dad) was a funny, loving, carefree, wonderful lad. He was a talented artist and a mine of the most bizarre information and intriguing philosophies. His family and friends will miss him so very much.

Songs For T.

Around the world many young people are struggling with a range of challenges, often they find it difficult to discuss their problems. Very tragically for some young people the issues they face become too much for them to cope with and they attempt suicide. The words, music and visual art of certain artists can provide significant comfort and reassurance. The authenticity of voices recognising and reflecting on their own challenges can provide a great deal of help and solace. In particular, the work of ‘bedroom pop’, ‘alternative’ and ‘Lo-fi Indie’ artists has a strong resonance with young people feeling the pressures and challenges of a complex world.

This album collects exclusive tracks from emerging artists such as Sign Crushes Motorist (IRE), Sundots (US), Lots of Hands (UK) and Mage Tears (UK), alongside well-established artists such as Jeffrey Lewis (US), Alice Thompson (UK) and Nev Clay (UK).

The proceeds of sales of vinyl, cassette tapes, CDs and digital downloads will go to two UK charities. PAPYRUS UK (https://www.papyrus-uk.org/) and Kidscape (https://www.kidscape.org.uk/). The aims of these charities are to provide support for young people to prevent suicide and to tackle bullying, in all its forms.

The work of these charities is so very important and there needs to be a greater recognition of how significant a problem these issues have become. Our aim is to ensure young people know there are people who care about them and can help them, that whatever their problems are, suicide is never the solution. We need young people to understand the damage that bullying can cause and to have empathy and understanding about what their words and actions can do. We also need people to speak up when they have problems and to ask for the help they need. We hope this music and art will help to make links to the help they can receive.

The album is titled ‘Songs for T’ because it is dedicated to Thomas, aka Tots, aka Tommy Tickle-mouse. Thomas was a funny, loving, carefree and wonderful lad, he was a talented artist who loved music. He lived a happy life for fourteen years until he found pressures and challenges within his friend group became intolerably difficult. He didn’t seek help but took it upon himself to end the turmoil and fear he felt, by taking his own life. As he said in his final note, he loved his family and was sorry, but he was tired and scared. We hope this album can provide some hope and direction for anyone who feels the way Thomas felt. If it can help people to avoid getting to those challenging positions then the effort and contribution of these great artists will have been worthwhile.
